At midsummer the sun
sets just off the furthest coast of Lanai, whilst at midwinter it
appears to drop into ocean off the coast of Kahoolawe. If you are
lucky, you will then see the renowned "green flash". Frequently,
after the sun has set, much of the sky will change from yellow to
orange to deep red, and fleeting clouds will be edged in gold against
the remaining deep turquoise infinity.

Also, that part of Kihei
which is nearest to Maalaea Bay offers excellent speed windsurfing,
though usually no wave-jumping. Paia and Kuau, on the North shore,
are close to Hookipa Beach ("the windsurfing capital of the world").
There, the stores lean towards health foods and windsurfing gear.
This is also the "road to Hana" with its rain forest and slow, old-world
pace.
